Dr. Malaika Horne author of the book Mother Wit: Exalting Motherhood While Honoring a Great Mother, will join us to discuss her book. She will be available for book signing.
This book explores growing up in St. Louis primarily during the 1950s & 1960s, first in Mill Creek, a community of 20,000 African Americans that were displaced due to urban renewal. In the second community, the family moved to a nice middle-class multi-racial neighborhood in North St. Louis with small bungalows and manicured lawns. The culture and class shocks were eye-openers. It is more a coming of age story during a period of immense social, racial and political upheaval and how a low-income African American family was able to cope and adapt to eventually succeed despite tremendous odds.
This workshop will be the springboard for additional book club meetings for Sisters CARE.
